Where I'm From

I am from flowered cherry trees From blanket forts and the parked red van I am from the brick laid willow tree that has since been cut down (tall, red, lively) I am from the dead grass The olive branch Proud to represent and stand behind

I am from movie marathons and an open home From Jon and from Stacey I am from the loud mouthers and the musically obsessed From the be seen not heard and the constellations With the lamp to my feet and the light to my path To guide my journey

I am from the fruitcake capital of the world Stress baking and homemade pizzas From the lost kite of grace And the deep snow beyond the porch

From my grandmother’s careful care Wrapped delicately under her bed Overflowing with faces of the firstborns Lacking in other eyes and smiles Floating through the air, waiting for me to catch them and remember

I am from birthday songs and cheese string From celebrating the rain and mud To tea warmed snuggles and midnight snacks I am from home.
